WATC and Cowley College Transition Updates

Operation of Cowley College’s Southside Education Center will transfer from Cowley to the Wichita Area Technical College (WATC) on July 1. What will that change mean for you?

If you begin general education coursework in July 2008 or later …
You will have the ability to immediately transfer your general education credits to Wichita State University. Please click on the letter from WSU at right on this page.

If you’re currently a WATC student ...
You won’t notice a change right away. However, if you’re accustomed to attending classes at our Central Center, your classes may be moving in the future. Keep checking back here and in the monthly Focus newsletter for updates!

If you’re currently a Southside Education Center student ...

  • It means continued opportunities. Students will be able to continue their education in a familiar environment with the same course offerings and many of the same instructors.
  • It means you can finish what you have started. Whether you are seeking an associate of applied science degree or a general transfer degree, you can still complete your program at the Southside Education Center.
  • It means the same friendly faces on campus to serve your educational needs. Most of the Southside Education Center faculty will continue to teach, and most of the support staff will continue to serve students at the southside location. Accordingly, there will be no interruption of the exceptional customer service and quality of instruction that you have come to expect.
  • It means security and peace of mind. The status of the Southside Education Center has in the past been year-to-year based on continued permission to offer courses in Sedgwick County. Since Sedgwick County is part of WATC’s service area, Southside Education Center can now operate as a permanent provider of education for this region.
  • You can expect to enjoy updated facilities and technology as well as additional program opportunities and course offerings. You can also expect flexible course scheduling and innovative delivery methods to meet the needs of our diverse population.

Keep checking here for updates on the exciting changes and opportunities that are just around the corner!

The Future WATC

Plans are being laid now for the programs and infrastructure needed for the new campus. The new campus will feel more like a business center than an educational institution. Workers for the county's five aircraft manufacturers and hundreds of businesses that support them will receive training at this new campus. A few of the programs selected for the new campus are various kinds of aviation training, manufacturing, welding and robotics.

This facility will allow for the hands-on training students and employers expect.

WATC is the managing partner of Sedgwick County’s National Center for Aviation Training at Jabara Airport: a world-class facility dedicated to educating students to work in high-paying aviation and manufacturing jobs. The first phase of construction will be complete this summer and the second phase should be finished and ready for students by fall 2010.
