Admissions Policy

Wichita Area Technical College (WATC) encourages all individuals who are interested in, and are capable of, extending their education beyond high school to apply. Admission to the college is open to the following individuals:

  • New students
  • Transfer students
  • High school students
Admissions Process
Technical Certificates and Associate of Applied Science Degrees

New Students: High school graduates, persons holding a General Educational Development (GED) diploma.

Transfer Students: Transfer students seeking admission, who have graduated from high school or have obtained a GED, need to submit an official copy of their transcripts from all other colleges attended. Transfer students must have successfully completed 15 hours of credit from an accredited institution and have a grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 or higher to be accepted as a transfer student at WATC. If the applicant does not have 15 hours of college credit, they must meet the admission requirements for new students.

High School Students: High school students may register for courses with the written approval of their parent/guardian and their high school counselor and send an official high school transcript. High school students must provide a payment agreement from their high school as WATC is unable to assess tuition to high school students, Kansas Statutes Annotated (KSA) 72-4417. Students must document evidence of potential success at the college level. Contact Admissions, 316.677.9400, for more information about attending WATC while in high school.

Certificate of Completion Students

Applicants seeking admission to courses, such as Certified Nurse Aide, Dietary Manager and Phlebotomist, must complete a WATC Application for Admission. Applicants may be required to demonstrate entry-level knowledge, skill proficiency or other identified requirements.

Nonaward-Seeking Students

Students who wish to register in a course, but do not plan to complete an AAS degree or technical certificate, must complete a WATC Application for Admission.

Returning Students

Students who have a break in registration for more than four semesters must reactivate their file by completing an admissions update form. There is no cost for reactivation of the admissions file. However, students may be required to meet any new admission requirements for the college or program before readmission is granted.

Some college programs have additional requirements that must be met before students may be admitted into those particular programs. These may include minimum scores on the admission placement test or other program-specific requirements. See New-Student Checklist for additional information.

The Future WATC

Plans are being laid now for the programs and infrastructure needed for the new campus. The new campus will feel more like a business center than an educational institution. Workers for the county's five aircraft manufacturers and hundreds of businesses that support them will receive training at this new campus. A few of the programs selected for the new campus are various kinds of aviation training, manufacturing, welding and robotics.

This facility will allow for the hands-on training students and employers expect.

WATC is the managing partner of Sedgwick County’s National Center for Aviation Training at Jabara Airport: a world-class facility dedicated to educating students to work in high-paying aviation and manufacturing jobs. The first phase of construction will be complete this summer and the second phase should be finished and ready for students by fall 2010.
