In January 2004, the Aviation Technical Center (ATC) was established in Wichita, Kansas. Wichita, Air Capital of the World, is where the industries’s top aircraft manufacturers — The Boeing Company, Bombardier, Cessna Aircraft Company and Raytheon — are represented. These aircraft manufacturers donated equipment to the ATC totaling more than $600,000. The four manufacturers, along with the city of Wichita, the Sedgwick County Commission and Wichita Public Schools USD 259, helped form the private non-profit Kansas Technical Training Institute (KTTI) to prepare for future workforce needs. Due to projected critical needs in aviation, the first phase was the implementation of WATC’s world-class aviation maintenance technology school. The programs at the ATC are fast-paced and packed full of excitement. Credits apply toward an associate of applied science degree. Financial aid is available. The ATC successfully trains professionals for the aviation industry and other industries as well. The ATC is a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certificated Aviation Maintenance Technician training site.
The Aviation Maintenance Technology (AMT) program is 2,100 hours in length and requires approximately 18 months for completion. Students in this program receive instruction in 45 different subject areas specified by the FAA. By satisfactorily completing WATC’s program, students are then eligible to take the oral, written and practical examinations for the general subject areas — Airframe I and II and Powerplant I and II.
The ATC offers day and evening classes:
- Day: Monday–Thursday, 7:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m.
- Evening: Monday–Friday, 4:00 p.m.–10:00 p.m.
