Advanced Aerostructures Technician
Certificate of Completion

The 10-week Advanced Aerostructures Technician program provides students an opportunity to advance beyond introductory skills used in aircraft manufacturing and the service industry. The program includes instruction in basic skills but also provides instruction in advanced techniques in repairs, dimpling, use of sealants and working with curved surfaces. The manufacturing skills courses provide students with the basic skills and knowledge to enter the manufacturing field. Instruction includes the fundamentals of blueprint reading, precision measurement, math skills and environmental health and safety.

The Aerostructures Assembly course includes instruction in the fundamentals of assembly, meeting set standards, safety issues and use of common aircraft sheetmetal tools. Students learn how to identify fasteners, install and remove fasteners, assemble sheetmetal components and identify and maintain proper “skin” quality.

Advanced Aerostructures Technician Course Descriptions

AER 130 Aircraft Blueprint Reading 2.0 Cr Hrs
Studies basic aircraft blueprint and reading engineering drawings. Students develop the ability to locate and interpret dimensions on engineering drawings. The application of blueprint reading and interpreting dimension skills to the manufacturing environment is an integral part of this course.

AER 131 Precision Instrument 1.0 Cr Hr
Studies the basic measurement tools used in manufacturing today. Students achieve proficiency through using and reading basic measuring devices throughout the course. Primary focus is on micrometers, steel rules, Vernier calipers and other manufacturing related instruments.

AER 132 Aerostructures Assembly 4.0 Cr Hrs
Provides instruction in the fundamentals of assembly, meeting set standards, safety issues, use of common aircraft sheetmetal tools, sealant application, math and aircraft blueprint reading. Students learn to identify fasteners, install and remove fasteners, assemble sheetmetal components and identify and maintain proper “skin” quality. Students receive classroom instruction and demonstration as well as shop demonstration and performance.

AER 133 Advanced Aerostructures 2.0 Cr Hrs
Provides instruction in the advanced skills of assembly, using set standards, safety issues, use of common aircraft sheetmetal tools, sealant application, math and aircraft blueprint reading. Students learn to identify fasteners, install and remove fasteners, assemble sheetmetal components and identify and maintain proper “skin” quality. Repair techniques and the more difficult applicable skills for aviation manufacturing are the focus of this course. Students receive classroom instruction and demonstration as well as shop demonstration and performance.

CED 106 Computer Introduction 1.0 Cr Hr
Covers the fundamentals of computer usage. At the end of the course, students are able to utilize Microsoft Office Word 2007 to create a résumé and cover letter, Microsoft Excel 2007 to create a spreadsheet and Microsoft PowerPoint 2007 to create and present a graphic presentation. They also learn how to access and browse the Internet and download files.

EMP 100 Employability Skills 2.0 Cr Hrs
Provides a study of human relations and professional development in today’s rapidly changing world that prepares students for living and working in a complex society. Topics include human relations, job acquisition, job retention, job advancement and professional image skills.

MSC 101 Occupational Safety 1.0 Cr Hr
Provides students with an appreciation and basic understanding of the safety rules and regulations that govern the manufacturing industry. Students learn and apply safe work habits when using tools and equipment. Students are given the opportunity to earn a 10-hour General Industry OSHA card.

MSC 102 Applied Shop Math 2.0 Cr Hrs
Focuses on the skills required to complete common shop mathematical problems including reading and interpreting part dimensions, checking part features and recording accurate measurements. Applying mathematical skills to the manufacturing environment is an integral part of this course.

The Future WATC

Plans are being laid now for the programs and infrastructure needed for the new campus. The new campus will feel more like a business center than an educational institution. Workers for the county's five aircraft manufacturers and hundreds of businesses that support them will receive training at this new campus. A few of the programs selected for the new campus are various kinds of aviation training, manufacturing, welding and robotics.

This facility will allow for the hands-on training students and employers expect.

WATC is the managing partner of Sedgwick County’s National Center for Aviation Training at Jabara Airport: a world-class facility dedicated to educating students to work in high-paying aviation and manufacturing jobs. The first phase of construction will be complete this summer and the second phase should be finished and ready for students by fall 2010.
